North Baja Pipeline Expansion Project

Overview

The North Baja Expansion Project completed in April 2008 allows natural gas arriving at terminals in Mexico from the western Pacific Rim to be delivered into California and other southwestern U.S. markets, providing an entirely new natural gas supply basin for the region.

The first phase of the Expansion involved system changes to accommodate reverse flow of natural gas on the overall North Baja/Gasoducto Bajanorte system. On North Baja, the Expansion also involved a short amount of pipeline to a new meter station and interconnect with Southern California Gas Company.

As a result of the changes, North Baja is able to receive up to 600 million cubic feet a day (MMcf/d) of gas from Mexico. That gas is sourced from the Energia Costa Azul LNG facility off the coast of Baja, Mexico. Future expansions could allow for importation of up to 2.7 billion cubic feet a day of natural gas. That prospective expansion is dependent on construction of additional LNG facilities off the coast of Mexico.
